What type of substrate is suitable for gravel grids?
For gravel grids, you need a load-bearing, frost-proof, water-permeable substructure: remove topsoil, create a subgrade with a gradient of approx. 1–2%, then install a compacted frost protection/gravel base layer (e.g. 0/32)—guideline value 10–15 cm for paths, 20–35 cm for parking spaces—optionally geotextile, then 2–3 cm of chippings (1/3 or 2/5) levelled off; only then lay the grid and fill with round gravel 4/8–8/16.
Can lawn grids be laid without a substructure?
For areas that are subject to heavy traffic and loads, you should not lay lawn grids without a substructure, as otherwise the ground may sink and the slabs may tilt. Only in areas with low loads can a complex substructure be dispensed with in exceptional cases.
How do you lay lawn grids?
The usual procedure is: excavate the soil, install and compact a load-bearing gravel base layer, remove the gravel as a levelling layer, then lay the lawn grid panels using the click system and finally fill with soil or substrate and, if desired, sow grass seed.
Is a grass grid considered a sealed surface?
No, lawn grids are not generally considered to be sealed surfaces, as water can seep into the ground through the open chambers when these are filled with soil, turf or water-permeable material.
