How do pop-up sprinklers work?

Pop-up sprinklers are technically simple, but very effective:

1. Hidden in the ground:
   The sprinkler sits in a recessed plastic housing; the head is flush with the lawn surface when at rest.

2. Pressure lifts the head:
   As soon as water is present, pressure builds up in the housing. This causes the spray head to extend automatically.

3. Gearbox controls the spray arc:
   A small, robust gearbox rotates the head at the set angle – from partial circles to 360°.

4. Nozzles regulate range and water volume:
   Interchangeable or adjustable nozzles determine how far the jet reaches and how much water is delivered per minute.

5. Automatic possible:
   Pop-up sprinklers can be connected to irrigation computers, timers, and sensors.

6. After watering, they retract:
   If the water pressure drops, a spring pulls the head back into the housing. This protects the sprinkler and prevents it from interfering with mowing or walking on it.
